AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION - THE BUSINESS BREED

A Deeper Dive

Here are three Angus at Work episodes focused on supporting herd health at home.

There’s an old saying that rings true when approaching new experiences: “You don’t know what you don’t know.” Those words hold up when it comes to herd health and facilities. There are few things more frustrating than dealing with an illness on your own. Add in facilities that don’t pull their weight and it’s a recipe for pure frustration (and perhaps money lost).

Our theme for this edition of the Angus Beef Bulletin focuses on supporting herd health and building facilities that work for you. Here are a handful of Angus at Work episodes targeting health topics worth considering.

How Changing Antibiotic Access Will Affect You with Eric Moore

A policy went into effect June 11, 2023, that changed how every cattle producer in America managed herd health. While the policy certainly threw a wrench in the status quo, it also underlined the importance of a functioning veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR).

On this episode Editor Shauna Hermel sat down with veterinarian Eric Moore to discuss how Guidelines for Industry 263  would affect cattlemen, including over-the-counter medication access, veterinary feed directives (VFD), how thinking ahead would be necessary for animal welfare, questions to ask your veterinarian, other benefits of a VCPR and more.

“Go to the veterinarian that you want to work with, and really, the conversation should start out: ‘How can you help me have a program with my herd that doesn’t require me to use antibiotics? … But if I do need it, how can I get it? And can [they] write a script?’ Because part of that veterinary-client-patient relationship is the veterinarian having knowledge of your operation so they can help make sound decisions with you.” — Eric Moore

Use MLV and Killed Vaccines Strategically to Create Lifetime Immunity with Thach Winslow

You’ve likely asked the question, “Which is better — modified-live virus (MLV) or killed vaccines?” Both have their place in your herd. If used strategically, they can work together to create lifetime immunity.

The Angus Beef Bulletin  team sat down with Elanco’s Thach Winslow for this episode to discuss when each type of vaccine is optimally used, whether they work together, what kind of timing you should keep in mind, how they affect profitability, what you should always vaccinate against, where producers can save some money, and more.

“There’s no easy button, no. But what we do have is a concept of how to build lifetime immunity in your herd and maintain it. So we know that modified-live vaccines do a very good job of stimulating both branches of the immune system. So that’s both the cell-mediated as well as the humoral or the antibody side of the immune system. Once you give modified-live vaccines, that immune system is now set up for the rest of that animal’s life to respond well.” — Thach Winslow

Tips to Prevent a Biological Time Bomb with Jody Wade

Liver flukes have been around for a long time, but researchers and veterinarians are still learning new things about them. They’ve also spread from the coastal areas to most of the United States, so management and prevention are good topics for all cattlemen.

Hermel sat down with Jody Wade, senior veterinary consultant at Boehringer Ingelheim, on this episode to discuss the odd life cycle of liver flukes, the recurrence of issues they can cause, the return on investment (ROI) of managing flukes, treatment and prevention options, and more.

“That’s the trouble. You may not ever see it, [because it’s] so subclinical. As it manifests itself, usually when we know that we’ve got a real liver fluke problem is when these cattle end up on a kill floor and we’ve got all kinds of livers that are being condemned just due to the prevalence of all the liver flukes.” — Jody Wade
