For Koupals B&B Angus of Dante, S.D., the key is to not make producing good cattle too complicated. The basics of functional cattle are the same everywhere, and the Koupals subscribe to the theory that they do not need to reinvent the wheel.
Raising functional and profitable cattle can be hard to measure and complicated to explain. Data is valuable, but it doesn’t replace the day-to-day hands-on approach five generations of Koupals take within their own cow herd. Knowing their individual cows coupled with more than 50 years of Angus Herd Improvement Records, the family feels they can help with the bull selection process.
“By drawing from the personal understanding of our herd, one can be confident that we are able to help find the bull best suited for your program,” says Bud Koupal. “We strive to make the best genetics possible to offer a diverse set of bulls with many unique genetics available.”
The Koupals do most everything themselves, Bud explains. Long distances between pastures and a desire to produce problem-free cattle have led the family to manage their seedstock program as close to a commercial operation as possible.
“We concentrate on the maternal side as the dams are the key to a successful program,” Bud says.
With a large family active in the operation, the Koupals host two opportunities to purchase their genetics, beginning with a production sale in January under the Koupal Midwest brand. The second Monday in February, the Koupal’s B&B Angus bull sale kicks off with plans to offer both yearling and aged bulls.
