AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION - THE BUSINESS BREED
PGS Shows
The PGS provides exhibitors an additional opportunity to exhibit heifers while learning about the importance of Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) and economic selection indexes ($Values) in seedstock selection. Animals are judged on both genotype and phenotype, each weighted 50% in the final score.
What is PGS?
The Phenotype and Genotype Show (PGS) creates an additional opportunity for exhibitors to show heifers and bulls while gaining valuable experience with Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) and economic selection indexes ($Values) as tools for selecting seedstock.
Animals are judged using a composite scoring system that equally weights:
- 50% Genotype (EPDs & $Values)
- 50% Phenotype (traditional visual evaluation)
In case of a tie, phenotype placing serves as the tiebreaker.
How it Works
Exhibitors enter the PGS alongside their show entries for the specific event. Judges receive class cards that include:
- Entry number
- Birthdate
- EPDs & $Values (CED, BW, WW, YW, Milk, Marb, REA, $M, $B, $C)
- Percentile breakdown
The same judge evaluates both genotype and phenotype. Association staff compiles composite placings prior to the show.
Entry Requirements
- All animals must be genomic tested before the entry deadline and have with a DNA sample on file with Angus Genetics Incorporated (AGI), by entry deadline.
- GE-EPDs are required at check-in.
- Animals with interim or non-genomic EPDs at check‑in cannot show.
- Basic parentage testing does not qualify.
