Hinkson Angus of Cottonwood Falls, Kan., has been raising registered Angus cattle since 1960 in environments that lean to the extreme.
The Kansas Flint Hills — known to reach 110° heat indexes in the summer and -30° windchills in the winter — combined with demanding management practices at Hinkson mean cattle are not pampered. They are expected to perform while grazing native pasture year-round.
“We take a balanced approach when breeding cattle by staying away from extreme EPDs,” says Trey Hinkson, noting exceptional, problem-free cattle are difficult to make, while exceptional EPDs are not. “We strive to produce problem-free cattle that are functional and fertile.”

Cattle need to be hardy to perform, and cows in the herd who originate back to some of the foundation females purchased in 1960 are a testament to that. Hinkson Angus prides itself on selling registered Angus bulls to a local, loyal and repeat customer base. In fact, more than 85% of Hinkson Angus bulls are purchased by repeat customers and stay within 100 miles of the ranch.
“The Angus cow is the foundation of this breed. She is not only maternally superior to any other breed, but also capable of producing progeny that excel from a carcass value standpoint,” says Hinkson.
“The beauty of the Angus breed is its diversity. There is truly something for everyone.”
The Hinksons host their annual production sale every March, offering spring pairs, donor females, registered bulls and frozen genetics. Registered bulls and commercial spring bred heifers are available private treaty each fall at the ranch.
