“Cows that stay and steers that pay” is the mantra of the R.A. Brown Ranch, Throckmorton, Texas. Donnell and Kelli Brown are the fifth generation to own and manage the business focused on the needs of their commercial cow-calf producers. Resounding wisdom from a wise ol’ cowman keeps Donnell grounded: “Whatever you do, don’t mess up my cows.”

The R.A. Brown Ranch started raising and selling Angus seedstock more than 130 years ago, having sold more than 23,000 bulls since their annual bull auctions started 50 years ago. Their success comes from continually producing what commercial cow-calf ranchers need while implementing sound science and technology to make the most rapid progress possible.

The family focuses on highly fertile cows with great feet, teats, udders, docility and marbling. Those cows must fit their customers’ environments while producing calves that gain efficiently and perform. They have been carcass testing cattle for 20 years, and their most recent loads graded 78% Prime.

“Our mission is very clear,” says Donnell. “We are continually striving to improve the sustainability and efficiency of converting God’s forage into safe, nutritious and great-tasting beef to better feed His people.”

Rooted in a stout history, Donnell and Kelli are most excited about the future. Both sons, Tucker and Lanham, are back at the ranch, and the whole family believes firmly in education — sharing their revolutionary EPD targets, advocating for the ag industry, and participating actively in industry organizations.

They host two annual production sales on the second Wednesdays of March and October.
