A Deeper Dive
Here are three "Angus at Work" episodes focused on feeder-cattle and cattle markets.

The cattle market is still holding strong, and that leads to questions regarding marketing, as well as the herd rebuild. Where are we headed in the future, and what might that look like?
Our theme for this edition of the Angus Beef Bulletin focuses on innovations in agriculture and is paired with our 2025 Feeder-Calf Marketing Guide insert. Here are a handful of complementary Angus at Work episodes that cover topics worth considering back at home.
Cattlemen are without a doubt one of the most resilient groups of people on the planet. While the cattle industry has weathered its fair share of market ups and downs, this current point in the cattle cycle is treating producers selling cattle pretty well. On this episode Editor Shauna Hermel sat down with Rabobank Senior Beef Analyst Lance Zimmerman to discuss the market, what to expect in the near future, what expansion might look like for producers down the road and much more.
“What we have to think about, though, is if we’re going to continue to have some declining cattle slaughter going forward, and again, if the idea is we’re going to start retaining heifers with this upcoming fall run, you’re going to start to see that heifer number contribute to a decline in fed slaughter. We’ve already seen cow slaughter decline. — Lance Zimmerman
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could predict the future? Think about it! Having cattle market data ahead of time could help any producer make more informed decisions when it comes to marketing their livestock. That insight might not be as futuristic as you think!
On this episode, Editor Shauna Hermel and Senior Animal Protein Economist Dave Weaber with Terrain Ag discuss market issues looking forward three to four years, competing meats, consumer demand and more.
“Ground beef is a separate purchasing decision. It’s a convenience item. It’s very flexible. Everybody in the household likes it. How do we transition, not really out of ground beef, but how do we take one of those other eating experiences, either a pork or a chicken eating experience, and transition it?” — Dave Weaber
To kick off 2025 we visited with two individuals very familiar with cattle markets and customer service. We traveled to Beaver, Okla., to sit down with Jeff Slatten, owner of Beaver County Stockyards, to hear his opinion on the cattle markets, what is going well when it comes to cattle marketing, what producers can do to capitalize on the value of their cattle, and how the staff at Beaver County keep their buyers and sellers coming back for more each week.
Later in the episode we visit with Layne Konkel, voice of the Beaver County Stockyard market report, to hear more about how marketing cattle has changed at Beaver during the last several years.
“Why should you come here and be all nervous? I’m going to make sure your cattle bring what they should. Where else can you go get a check for $100,000 for a load of cattle and have a free cheeseburger? I mean, that should be a good time, not a bad time. It’s not like going to the dentist for a root canal.” — Jeff Slatten
