AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION - THE BUSINESS BREED

NEXT GENERATION

Be Thankful

As the harvest season comes to a close for many, we pause to reflect on the great abundance the Lord has provided, just as the pilgrims did in 1621, when a bountiful harvest prompted the first celebration of Thanksgiving.

Edward Winslow, leader of the settlers’ colony, began the celebration with this quote: “God be praised we had a good increase of Indian corn ... so that we might after a special manner rejoice together, after we had gathered the fruits of our labors ... Although it be not always so plentiful ... yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want.”

As my college fall semester concludes, I head home for the holidays with a heart full of gratitude. I’m fortunate to be the fifth generation of my family engaged in the Angus industry and privileged to spend time on the farm alongside them. There’s nothing quite like spending the day chuteside synchronizing a group of cows, and fine-tuning our show string in preparation for the fall majors. While I reflect on the many blessings in my life, I am most thankful for my salvation and the promise of tomorrow the good Lord provides.

The beef industry is being blessed with record-high cattle prices, and as Angus genetics are clearly leading the way, I find myself grateful to be a member of the Angus family.

The National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) has blessed me with once-in-a-lifetime memories and experiences; cultivated leadership skills and networks for my future, friendships with those who share the same passion that I do; and the very best junior membership I am more than honored to serve — all made possible by the generous individuals supporting the Angus Foundation.

We find our November calendars filled with artificial insemination breeding dates and upcoming holiday gatherings and we prepare to spend our days loading hay racks and silage wagons — maybe even stopping by Nana’s house for warm apple pies — don’t wait until Nov. 27 to give thanks for the many blessings surrounding you.
