The Angus breed is built on a foundation of legacy, a rich history shaped by families and sustained through generations. That same legacy continues to inspire strong leadership within our breed today. From the breeders who laid the groundwork to the young leaders through the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA), our shared passion and commitment to excellence ensures that Angus remains at the forefront.

When we think about the Angus breed, our minds naturally turn to its rich history and the remarkable families who have built and sustained it across generations.

When reflecting on families who have served as pillars of our breed, two stand out: the Satree and Sankey families. Both have deep roots in Angus history and have passed on a love for the breed through generations.

For Katy (Satree) Rucker, Angus cattle have always been a family affair.

“My parents, Doug and Jane Satree, got me heavily involved at a young age,” Rucker shared. “They both agreed it was one of the best junior breed associations to get involved in.”

What kept her engaged over the years were the relationships and experiences that shaped her both personally and professionally.

"Over the course of my junior Angus career and beyond, it truly is the friendships I've made along the way, coupled with being able to interact with people who have had a large impact on my life,” she said.

Rucker credits her NJAA experience with more than friendships — it gave her skills that have carried into her professional life.

“Although the junior Angus program really allowed me to learn and develop social skills and the ability to network with other people, I believe the most important thing I learned was how to work through obstacles and use the critical thinking skills necessary to be an integral team member,” she explained.

Today, she serves as Director of Beef Operations and Yield Analysis at National Beef Packing LLC, exemplifying how NJAA experiences help members grow into leaders.

For Cody Sankey, the Angus story began even earlier — as a fifth-generation Angus breeder.

“Angus cattle have been part of my life since the day I was born,” Sankey said. “The love for the breed was instilled in me by my grandfather, Bob Laflin, at an early age.”

Traveling the country with his grandfather, attending Angus events, and visiting operations sparked a lifelong passion that continues to this day. Sankey reflects on how the NJAA shaped both his personal and professional journey.

“There’s no doubt I wouldn’t be where I am today without the NJAA,” he said. “The friendships, connections with breeders, and lessons learned through contests and teamwork all played a major role in preparing me for my professional career.”

Today, Sankey serves as Beef Programs Manager at URUS, leading North American beef genetics procurement for GENEX, Alta, and PEAK, while also running Sankey Angus in Economy, Indiana, with his family.

His daughter recently showed at her first National Junior Angus Show — a full-circle moment that demonstrates how the NJAA’s impact continues across generations.

Stories like these show why the NJAA is such a unique and powerful community. It’s more than just cattle or competitions — it’s a place where young people build friendships, develop leadership skills, and create memories that last a lifetime. Members like Rucker and Sankey remind us that the NJAA doesn’t just shape future leaders — it inspires a passion for Angus cattle, a commitment to family and community, and a love for the breed that truly lasts a lifetime.
