Building a Legacy

Creating a story that lasts in the industry.

“He was such a good person. We were lucky to know him,” my mom said over the phone.

I called her to make sure she heard the news a friend from the cattle industry had passed away.

“Sure was,” I quickly agreed as my heart twinged with sadness. The world lost a bright soul. He was honest, kind and led by example in service. He made everyone he spoke to feel important. He was someone to look up to, someone to emulate.

Moments like these leave me thinking: How do I want to be remembered? And, maybe more importantly, how do I want to be thought of today?

A legacy isn’t something that just appears at the end of a career or a lifetime. It’s built in the everyday choices we make, the way we treat others and the values we live out.

Building a legacy doesn’t just happen — it takes initiative and integrity. It’s about aligning who we are with what we stand for.

Here are some steps to get you, and me, thinking about the legacy we hope to leave.

  1. Define your values. What do you want to be known for? Is it honesty, generosity, leadership or innovation? These values will guide your decisions.
  2. Take meaningful steps. Living out those values requires action. If you value service, volunteer your time. If you value mentorship, invest in younger generations. Small, intentional actions add up.
  3. Share with others. A true legacy isn’t hidden away. Share knowledge freely and encourage others to grow. Your influence can extend far beyond your own reach.

The Angus business is built on legacy. Families have worked to improve their herds and create opportunities for the next generation of cattlemen. That kind of progress doesn’t happen without people who care deeply about doing things the right way.

It’s the beginning of a new year and a good time to reflect and plan. Start today in building your own legacy in the way we treat others and the values we uphold.
