Stop #1

Downey Angus | Wamego, Kan.

Nearly 150 Angus breeders gathered in Barb Downey and Joe Carptenter’s barn to start the morning. The couple offered a deep dive into the world of technology that helps them run Downey Ranch on a daily basis.

The tools they use help with inventory management, data collection and submission, and more. Downey says like many other producers, she and Joe know the more data they can send upstream to the American Angus Association, the more meaningful information they can get back in return.

“To have folks — some of the top Angus breeders in the country — here on your place was a real honor,” says Barb Downey.

Stop #2

Shamrock Farms | Alma, Kan.

The Crenshaws welcomed Association members  with a trio of camels and a sampling of their milk. Though the selfies were plentiful, the family shared Shamrock Farms deep Angus history.

The operation was created on 180 acres in 1948 by George Crenshaw. Six years prior, he won Grand Champion Steer at the National Western Stock Show. Christy called her father’s win “unexpected.” The animal had first been named reserve champion Angus steer, but the judge bypassed the champion Angus steer in the final drive. George’s steer was named Grand Champion.

“It was such a big deal that the rules changed almost immediately,” Christy explains. “That never again could a reserve champion animal be suspended to become grand champion.”

Stop #3

Fink Beef Genetics | Randolph, Kan.

A family operation through and through, Galen Fink opened the doors of his facility with his wife, Lori; daughter, Megan; son-in-law, Chad; and granddaughter, Whitley. The Finks came to The Business Breed in 1977 with the purchase of one cow; and through the years, they’ve expanded their business. From embryo transfers to bulls sold across the nation, they have the experience in the reproductive sector to serve as the perfect final stop on the 2025 National Angus Tour.

“It’s a great honor to be able to host — to have this many breeders,” says Galen Fink. “These tours a great way for people to get together, meet new people, new old friendships.”
