Guiding a Rising Star

On the East Coast, few rivalries burn hotter than the one between the University of North Carolina Tar Heels and the Duke Blue Devils.

These two powerhouse basketball programs are located less than 10 miles apart, and their competition spans more than a century. It’s not just about who wins the game — it’s about who builds the strongest team, the deepest legacy and the most influential leaders.

I have always enjoyed college basketball, and these two teams are fun to watch. Anyone can appreciate the leadership and mindset of legendary coaches Roy Williams (UNC) and Mike Krzyzewski (Duke).

For junior members working hard on their farms, preparing for competitions or stepping into leadership roles, there’s a lot to gain from the approach of these coaches.

These Hall of Fame coaches were more than master strategists — they were mentors committed to shaping the lives of young athletes. They often spoke about their recruiting philosophy, and three qualities topped their list: talent, work ethic and character. That trio can build championships — and it can build future leaders in agriculture too.

Well-rounded talent: more than just skill

Both coaches made it clear — natural ability was important, but they looked for players who could do everything. They didn’t just want high scorers. They wanted athletes who could defend, pass, rebound and understand the game as a whole.

That applies in the Angus world, too. Success in livestock judging, showmanship and even public speaking isn’t just about mastering one skill. It’s about being versatile. Whether you’re evaluating cattle, leading a community event or working with your team, being well-rounded helps you stand out and contribute more.

Relentless work ethic: outworking the competition

Williams often told his players, “Don’t just work as hard as your teammates — work harder than all of them.” It wasn’t about being naturally gifted; it was about giving everything you had, every day.

For junior members, the same rule applies. Whether it’s feeding livestock before sunrise, preparing for competitions or learning leadership skills, those who embrace hard work achieve the most. Discipline, ambition and grit lead to success not just in the ring, but throughout life.

Strong character and team spirit: the backbone of leadership

Krzyzewski emphasized character as core to building champions. He watched how players treated their teammates, responded to setbacks and upheld the team’s values. Both coaches prioritized athletes who put the team first.

That’s a powerful message for young leaders. Angus projects are never just about the individual — they’re built on Angus family. Whether you’re mentoring others, working in a judging team or organizing an event, putting group goals ahead of personal ambition builds stronger relationships and a lasting influence.

From rivalry to responsibility: becoming a leader on and off the field

Between them, Williams and Krzyzewski led their teams to eight national championships and coached dozens of All-American athletes. But their greatest legacy? Building young men into future leaders.

Junior members have a similar opportunity. Every experience — win or lose — helps build the foundation for leadership in agriculture and beyond. The same traits that shaped championship basketball teams can shape the next generation of advocates, entrepreneurs and community builders in the livestock industry.

You don’t need a basketball court to build a legacy. You just need commitment, humility and heart. That’s how future stars are made — on farms, in barns and everywhere Angus youth are learning to lead.
