AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION - THE BUSINESS BREED
Developing our Strengths
Communication, determination, adaptability, and critical thinking

While this is a short list, these are the first four traits that came to mind when I tried to identify the strengths I most commonly apply to my daily life. Each of these is, in general, a trait that I would consider something we must learn over time. Sure, one trait may come more naturally than another, but realistically, for us to develop these as strengths, we must be intentional about putting them into practice.
Within the National Junior Angus Association, I have found contest and career development events to be instrumental in helping me grow in both areas. Firstly, these contests in general push us to step outside of our comfort zone, and here is where the truest growth will occur.
I would venture to say that it is a general belief that writing a 5-minute extemporaneous speech that you then present to a panel of judges is not something that creates a “comfortable” environment.
However, these sorts of hurdles help us develop our strengths. At times, it is easy to shy away from new and different experiences; however, to reap the most benefit, we must lean into these challenges.
Secondly, I firmly believe that each contest offered through the NJAA epitomizes “real-world application,” and to me, this practicality is what makes them most valuable. Not only do they perfectly apply to the cattle industry, but they also stimulate real-world situations that prepare us for the challenges we will face throughout life. There are countless opportunities available to young people today; however, few are as instrumental for genuine growth as participating in a sales pitch in a team setting or testing your knowledge and response time in a quiz bowl competition.
As with anything, the true value of the NJAA lies in the experiences we have and the skills we gain. I believe that in order to reap the full benefit of the NJAA, we must continuously embrace new challenges, operate outside of our comfort zone and be curious in everything we do. Over time, this approach will enable us to develop determination, adaptability, critical thinking, and strong communication skills that will lead to lifelong success.
