As we look ahead to the 2026 National Junior Angus Show in Louisville, Kentucky, there is so much to look forward to. With “Bases Loaded in the Bluegrass” as our theme, the week centers around connection, teamwork and the fun spirit that brings the Angus family together.
What makes NJAS so meaningful isn’t just the competition, even though stepping into the ring is always a thrill. It’s the connections, the friendships and the feeling of being part of something bigger. Whether someone is showing for the very first time, catching up with old friends, or jumping into a new contest just for fun, Louisville is the place to be this summer.
Something new to look forward to is Penny Wars. All week long, you’ll see jars with different names on them, and people dropping in their spare change to “vote” for who they want to see pied during closing ceremonies. It’s supporting the National Colorectal Cancer Foundation, so every penny really does make a difference.
This year, we are bringing a new competition: the Meat Smoking Contest, or as it’s being called, the Smoke House Shoot Out. Anyone at NJAS can take part. All you need is your own smoker, and Certified Angus Beef will provide the meat. The contest takes place during Family Fun Night, so it’s the perfect mix of good food and time spent hanging out with people you don’t get to see often. Judging is simple; attendees get scorecards and point sheets, so everyone gets to join in on the fun and the taste testing.
As we head into the new year, there are also a couple of important rule updates that begin January 1, 2026. They’re meant to bring more consistency and clarity to NJAA shows. The age eligibility window is now set at ages 7 through 21 as of January 1, with eligible birthdates running from January 1, 2005, through December 31, 2018. Exhibitors still need to be Junior, Regular, or Life Members of the American Angus Association, and juniors can keep participating through the entire year they turn 21.
There’s also an update to ownership rules that makes things easier for families. Owned animals can now be multi-owned between siblings if everyone is listed as an owner by the ownership deadline and all siblings fall within NJAA age guidelines. The existing bred-and-owned rules remain the same, and farm or ranch names are still not allowed on owned animals unless the entry meets the bred-and-owned requirements.
All in all, the 2026 NJAS is shaping up to be something special. With long-time traditions and fun new events. Louisville is ready to welcome juniors and families for a week full of good times.
