A native of Hay Springs, Neb., he received degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Iowa State University, where he coached meat and livestock judging teams. After a short career as a county extension agent, he joined the American Angus Association staff where he worked 34 years as regional manager in Nashville, Tenn., and then in Sioux Falls, S.D., where he lived until he passed away in 1995.
