Generations of maternal excellence, functional cattle and proven longevity come together in Boyd Abigail 6093, the featured female of the 2027 Angus Foundation Heifer Package.
Donated by Boyd Beef Cattle of Mays Lick, Kentucky, the March 2026-born female will sell as the lead-off lot in the National Angus Bull Sale on Friday, Jan. 8, 2027, during Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Proceeds from the sale benefit the Angus Foundation’s mission of supporting education, youth and research initiatives that strengthen the future of the Angus breed.
Backed by five generations of proven maternal genetics, Boyd Abigail 6093 represents the breeding philosophy that has guided the Boyd family for decades.
“If they stay, they pay,” said Charlie Boyd. “Through all the fads and trends in the purebred livestock business, if you stay grounded and breed good cattle that are fundamentally sound from the ground up, you’ll always have a market.”
Owned and operated by Charlie and Paula Boyd and their sons, Blake and Logan, Boyd Beef Cattle traces its roots to 1893. Now in its fourth generation, the operation has become recognized for producing balanced Angus genetics that combine phenotype, performance and maternal function.
The 2027 Angus Foundation Heifer Package donor showcases those priorities.
Her pedigree traces to one of the operation’s most influential cow families, the Abigails. Through her dam, Boyd Abigail 3022, she carries forward generations of maternal consistency anchored by Boyd Abigail 0001, a female that remains in production at 16 years of age and has recorded more than 100 progeny.
“There is really no guesswork,” Charlie said. “She comes from a proven cow family that has done exactly what we ask cattle to do generation after generation.”
Charlie describes the donation female as a complete package, blending maternal strength, structural correctness and phenotype with the performance and carcass traits demanded throughout today’s beef industry.
“I think she’s a rock-solid foundation for the buyer,” he said. “She’ll move the needle for the next program.”
For Blake Boyd, the female represents both the future of the Boyd breeding program and the values they've built the program around.
“This female really paints the picture of the program here,” Blake said.
He points to the Abigail cow family as one of the operations’ most reliable sources of long-term profitability and maternal excellence.
“She represents the freshest genetics we have while blending the proven side of that cow family,” Blake said. “We think she has a really bright future.”
The Boyd family believes the female’s versatility creates opportunities for a variety of breeding programs. Whether producing herd sires, replacement females or establishing the foundation for a new cow family, her predictable pedigree and balanced genetic profile offer significant potential for future generations.
While Abigail 6093 showcases decades of meticulous genetic selection, the opportunity to support the Angus Foundation made the Boyd’s decision to donate the 2027 Heifer Package an easy one.
The family's connection to the Foundation is personal. As a former National Junior Angus Association member, Blake experienced the impact of Angus Foundation programs and financial support first-hand.
“We’ve benefited greatly from the Foundation as an operation and as individuals,” Blake said. “I was lucky enough to receive numerous scholarships from the Foundation, and that helped a lot.”
In addition to supporting youth development and educational programs, the Boyd family recognizes the importance of Foundation-funded research initiatives that help drive the Angus breed forward.
“The Foundation does so many amazing things,” Charlie said. “If you care and support the Foundation, you’re showing your support for the future of the Angus breed.”
Blake agrees, “Having the funding to do those kinds of research projects is paramount. “You always have to be doing that or you’re falling behind.”
The opportunity to own Boyd Abigail 6093 will come Friday, Jan. 8, 2027, when she sells during the National Angus Bull Sale at Cattlemen’s Congress. The sale begins at 2 p.m. in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
“The Angus Foundation is honored to have the Boyd family donate the 2027 Angus Foundation Heifer Package female,” said Jaclyn Boester, Angus Foundation executive director. “Their family's reputation for producing functional, maternally focused cattle and their long-standing commitment to the Angus breed reflects the very values the Foundation seeks to promote. This donation represents more than an elite female; it is a meaningful investment in the future of Angus education, youth and research. Through their generosity, the Boyd family is helping create opportunities that will strengthen the breed for generations to come.”
