Important Update on Hydrocephalus - On February 13, 2009, the American Angus Association posted a notice setting forth a request to Association members from Dr. David Steffen of the University of Nebraska, asking them to be on the lookout for calves born with an extreme form of hydrocephalus. That posting included pictures of affected calves. Information received by the Association since that day has been promptly provided to Dr. Steffen who, in turn, shared it with Dr. Jon Beever at the University of Illinois. Today, we received a report from Dr. Beever in which he concludes that the presence of the extreme form hydrocephalus in Angus cattle is the result of a recessive mutation.
