Angus Champions Awarded at “Sweet Southern Showdown”

           

            Junior Angus enthusiasts from across the United States traveled to Perry, Ga., to compete for top honors at the 2009 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), July 19-25 at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter.  National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members exhibited 854 entries during the four days of cattle shows and also competed in numerous contests ranging from livestock judging and team sales to photography and graphic design.

            Bill Conley, Clarksdale, Mo., evaluated the 514 owned females.  Frank Jackson, Sanborn, Minn., judged the 193 bred-and-owned females, 47 bred-and-owned bulls, 27 owned cow-calf pairs and 11 bred-and-owned cow-calf pairs.  Brandon Callis, College Station, Texas, judged the 44 steers before naming champions.  Another 18 steers competed in the carcass contest, which was conducted live this year, with the use of ultrasound technology.

            Blake Boyd, Mayslick, Ky., led S A V Emblynette 8035 to the winner’s circle in the owned female show.  The February 2008 daughter of S A V Bismarck 5682 first topped junior division 3.

            Bethaney Enos, Cambridge, Ohio, showed the reserve grand champion owned female.  Champion Hill Skymere 6379 is a November 2007 daughter of S A V Bismarck 5682 and earlier won senior champion.

            In the bred-and-owned division, Danielle Foster, Niles, Mich., captured the grand champion banner with Seldon Rest BA Blackbird.  The April 2008 daughter of Leachman Saugahatchee 3000C first won late junior champion.

            Ashlyn Carter, Noblesville, Ind., led the reserve grand champion bred-and-owned female, C F Top Line Lady 814.  The February 2008 daughter of B C Marathon 7022 first won early junior champion.

            Katy Satree, Montague, Texas, led the grand champion bred-and-owned bull.  DAJS Revised Edition 212 is a February 2008 son of Champion Hill Edition 2029 and first won junior champion.

            Jake Cunningham, Sheridan, Ind., captured the reserve grand champion bull honor with BCII Money Makin Express 508.  The May 2008 son of Northern Express 0424 first topped the intermediate division.

            Courtney Jentz, Fennimore, Wis., showed the grand champion owned cow-calf pair.  Champion Hill Georgina 5918 is a January 2007 daughter of Leachman Saughatchee 3000C, and first topped the 2-year-old division.  A January 2009 heifer calf sired by S A V Bismarck 5682 completes the winning duo.

            Katie Gazda, Athens, Ga., led the reserve grand champion owned cow-calf pair.  Yon Hazel T154 is an October 2006 daughter of G A R Grid Maker with an October 2008 daughter of O C C Jet Stream 825J at side.  The pair first won reserve 2-year-old.

            Bryce Fitzgerald, West Grove, Pa., claimed grand champion bred-and-owned cow-calf pair with Cherry Knoll Cheyenne 7031.  The April 2007 cow sired by Champion Hill Edition 2029 has an April 2009 daughter of MCATL Reachout 836 at side.  The duo first won champion 2-year-old.

            Callie Smith, Lebanon, Tenn., captured reserve grand champion bred-and-owned cow-calf pair with J K S Miss Cheyenne 2267.  The March 2007 daughter of Boyd On Target 1083 has an April 2009 daughter of A A R New Design 6537 at side.  They first won reserve champion 2-year-old pair.

            Tucker Stewart, Washington, Kan., led the grand champion steer, Ultimate.  The February 2008 son of Jsar Mr Hall of Fame 159AER weighed in at 1,370 pounds on show day.

            James Moxley IV, West Friendship, Md., claimed reserve grand champion steer.  Moffitt Raptor M826 is a March 2008 son of Dameron P V F Raptor 702 and weighed 1,370 pounds.

            In the carcass contest, Hannah McCabe, Elk City, Kan., entered the winning entry, H F Lauren’s Future 815.  The March 2008 son of C A Future Direction 5321 graded Choice with a Yield Grade of 2.0 and met Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB) specifications.

            Hannah Wright, Spring City, Tenn., entered the reserve grand champion carcass steer, T W S Prime Plus 845.  The February 2008 son of Boyd Prime Plus 4122 graded Low Choice with a Yield Grade of 2.7.
