National Angus Tour Travels to Indiana

Angus breeders hosted guests prior to the Angus Convention in downtown Indianapolis.

Before the official opening of the third annual Angus Convention in Indianapolis, Ind., more than 200 cattle producers attended this year’s National Angus Tour Nov. 4.

Members of the Angus family from Scotland to Washington state took part in the tour, sponsored by Merck Animal Health and Zoetis. The day-long tour took participants on an adventure exploring Indiana agriculture and cattle production. Willer Timber Ridge Angus in Greencastle; Stewart Select Angus in Greensburg; and Coverdale Angus in Frankton,  played host to attendees as they made the rounds.

Neighboring cattle producers displayed their animals at each of the three stops to showcase the area’s quality Angus genetics. Guest vendors included GHG Angus, Wilson Cattle Co., Grubbs Angus, Horstman Cattle Co., Double R Bar Angus, Linz Heritage Angus, Les Craft Angus, Newman Angus, BCH, Bar-Water Angus, Carr Angus, Wilson Angus, Sherman Angus, Gerber Land & Cattle, and Sankey Angus.

Randy Mitteness of Minnesota said he decided to take advantage of the National Angus Tour as an opportunity to see agriculture across the United States and connect with other producers.

“I think all of agriculture is pretty much the same,” Mitteness said. “Farmers in Indiana are farmers in Minnesota; we all grow crops and cattle. There are probably a few different ways of doing it, but for the most part, we’re all trying to raise the best food we can for the people of this country.”

Between farms, the tour took a break from cattle production and stopped at the historic Hoosier Gym in Knightstown. Attendees listened to a brief presentation, then had the opportunity to explore the gym, take photos and shoot a few baskets. Coverdale Angus, the tour’s final stop, was honored with the American Angus Association’s Historic Angus Herd Award, which is awarded to Angus producers or immediate families who have been producing registered-Angus cattle for 50 years or more.

Next year, the Angus Convention and National Angus Tour will move to Fort Worth, Texas.
