Delegates
Elect Board Members, Conduct Business
American
Angus Association® delegates elected five members to its Board of
Directors Monday, Nov. 16 at the 126th Annual Convention of Delegates in
Louisville, Ky.
Newly
elected Board directors include: Charlie Boyd II, Mayslick,
Ky.; Scott Foster, Niles, Mich.; and Vaughn Meyer, Reva,
S.D.; Steve Olson, Hereford, Texas; and Cathy Watkins, Middletown, Ind., were
both elected to a second term on the Board.
Bill
Davis, Sidney, Mont., was elected the American Angus Association president and
chairman of the board. He succeeds Jay King, Rock Falls, Ill.
Joe
Hampton, Mount Ulla, N.C., was chosen by delegates to serve as vice president
and vice chairman of the Board. Jarold Callahan,
Edmond, Okla., will serve as treasurer for the year.
More than
340 elected delegates from throughout the United States and Canada represented
American Angus Association members and conducted the business of the
Association during the annual meeting and election. The meeting was at the
Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in conjunction with the North American
International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) Super-Point Roll
of Victory (ROV) Angus Show.
Bill
Davis, the Association’s newly elected president and chairman of the Board,
recently completed his term as vice president and vice chairman of the Board.
He and his wife, Jennifer, operate Rollin’ Rock Angus near Sidney, Mont.
Davis has
a bachelor’s degree in ag
business from Montana State University and is a past director of the Montana Stockgrowers Association and Montana Angus Association, in
addition to being past director and president of the Montana Beef Performance
Association.
As
Association president, Davis will serve as chairman of the Executive Committee
and will work closely with all directors to lead the board during the next
year.
Joe
Hampton, newly elected vice president and vice chairman of the Board, most
recently served as treasurer. He and his wife, Robin, operate Back Creek, a
cattle operation near Mount Ulla, N.C., focused on the production of Angus
bulls for commercial cattlemen. Hampton received his bachelor’s degree from
North Carolina State University and has been involved with agricultural
research for more than 25 years. He has served as president of the North
Carolina Angus Association and as board director for the North Carolina
Cattlemen’s Association.
As vice
president and vice chairman, Hampton will serve on the Executive, Breed
Improvement, Finance & Planning, and Information & Data Management
committees. He will also serve as chairman of the Research Priorities Committee
and Angus Productions Inc. (API) Board, and as a member of the Certified Angus
Beef LLC (CAB) Board.
Also
during the Annual Meeting, delegates approved an amendment to the Bylaws
permitting reinstatement of a Life Membership option, allowing members to
purchase memberships valid throughout the life of the member. Life memberships
cost $1,500.

Following are brief biographical sketches of the five members elected to
the American Angus Association Board of Directors at the 126th Annual Meeting.
Charlie Boyd II is a fourth-generation cattleman
from a family that began its involvement in the cattle industry in 1893. Today,
Boyd Beef Cattle of Mayslick, Ky., encompasses both
an Angus and a Hereford program.
Boyd
earned his ag economics
degree from the University of Kentucky, where he was a member of Alpha Gamma
Rho Fraternity, an agriculture senator, the ag
student body president, and a member of the livestock judging team.
He has
been involved in many cattlemen’s organizations, and has served as president of
the Kentucky Angus Association as well as a co-chair for the National Junior
Angus Show.
As a
Board director, Boyd will serve on the Association’s Activities and Industry
Relations committees as well as the Angus Foundation Board.
Scott Foster grew up on a family farm in
Niles, Mich., where he was active in FFA, serving as state president. He earned
a bachelor’s degree in animal husbandry from Michigan State University, where
he participated in the Block and Bridle club and was the Ag Senate
representative. He was also a member of the National Champion Livestock Judging
team at the NAILE, where he was named high individual overall.
Upon
graduation, Foster worked for Premier Beef in Howell, Mich. Today, he farms
with his brother Bruce and their parents at Seldom Rest Farms in southwestern
Michigan.
As an
Association Board director, Foster will serve on the Activities and Industry
Relations committees as well as the Angus Foundation Board.
Vaughn Meyer and his family manage Sodak Angus Ranch in northwest South Dakota. In his youth
Meyer participated in 4-H and FFA. He received a bachelor’s of science degree
in animal science production from South Dakota State University, where he was
active in Block and Bridle and Army ROTC. After serving in the Army, Meyer
returned to Sodak.
He has
been active in the Black Hills Angus Association, the Perkins County Livestock
Improvement Association, the Perkins County Farmers Union, the South Dakota Beef
Industry Council and the South Dakota Stock Growers Association.
As an
Association Board director, Meyer will serve on the Information & Data and
Finance & Planning committees as well as the Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI)
Board.
Steve Olson grew up south of Hereford,
Texas. He was active in 4-H, showing and livestock judging in his youth. He
received a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Texas A&M University,
where he was active in the Saddle & Sirloin Club and meat evaluation and
livestock judging teams. He received the Distinguished Honor Award from the
College of Agriculture.
After
graduation, Olson returned to Hereford to begin a diversified agriculture
operation.
He has
been active in the Texas Angus Association, Texas and Southwestern Cattle
Raisers Association, Texas Cattle Feeders Association, NCBA and Greater West
Texas Angus Association.
Olson now
begins his second term on the Association Board of Directors and will serve on
the Breed Improvement, Industry Relations and Activities committees. He will
also serve on the boards of Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) and AGI. Olson will
serve as Board chaplain.
Cathy Watkins graduated with high honors from
Michigan State University with a degree in animal science. While there, she was
a member of the meat judging team and the livestock judging team. Following
graduation she moved to Beaver Ridge Farm located in east central Indiana. Off
the farm, Watkins worked for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for 33 years,
retiring in 2007.
She
served as secretary for the Indiana Angus Association for 10 years and strongly
supports junior Angus programs. She also oversees the Crystal Awards given at
the NJAS.
Watkins
now begins her second term on the Association Board of Directors and will serve
on the Breed Improvement, Information & Data Management, and Finance &
Planning committees. She will also serve on the Angus Productions Inc. (API)
Board.
