Silent Auction Has Something for Everyone Angus supporters of all ages came together at the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Perry, Georgia, to support the 2009 Angus Foundation Silent Auction July 20-25, which grossed more than $9,600 in proceeds benefiting the Foundation’s education, youth and research activities. Individual donors and state Angus associations contributed 71 items to the 14th annual auction. “Generous support from Angus breeders, Angus youth and friends from allied industry enabled the Angus Foundation to enjoy a very productive and prosperous week at the NJAS,” said Foundation President Milford Jenkins. “The silent auction fundraiser is always a popular activity for NJAS attendees, young and old alike, as hundreds of bids were placed on the various items.” Bob and Jeannie
Smith of Elysian Fields, Texas, purchased the top-selling item for $1,100, a
wooden carving of an Angus steer, sold at auction to benefit the exhibitor of
the 1985 Grand Champion Overall Angus steer both live and carcass at the
NAILE in Louisville, Kentucky. Donated and exquisitely carved by Loren
Schlipf of A semen package donated by Hannah McCabe of Elk City, KS, featuring 5 units of EXAR Lutton 1831, was the second high selling item at $800. The Smith’s were the volume buyers at this year’s auction, donating $2,400 to support the activities of the Angus Foundation. The third high
selling item was a framed and signed print of Frank Champion Murphy’s
pastel sketch “The Angus Breed is Launched in the United States of
America.” Also included was a first-class 8-cent postage stamp issued
in 1973 that commemorated the same artwork and the 100th
anniversary of the importation of Angus cattle into the From its inception in 1995, the silent auction has grown annually as a fundraiser that generates unrestricted financial support for various activities sponsored by the Angus Foundation, such as the Raising the Bar Conference, Cattlemen’s Boot Camp, bovine marbling research, undergraduate and graduate scholarships.
