IMPORTANT DATES IN THE HISTORY OF THE
JUNIOR ACTIVITIES DEPARTMENT
1951 First junior membership was issued for $5 to be converted to life membership at age 21 for $15. Chicago, Ill.
1956 Junior Activities Department was established with fulltime staff employee, St. Joseph, Mo.
1967 First National Junior Angus Showmanship Contest held in conjunction with the All-American Angus Breeders Futurity, Lexington, Ky.
1969 First National Junior Angus Heifer Show, Columbia, Mo., held in conjunction with the National Conference at the University of Missouri.
1972 National Junior Recognition Program (Bronze and Silver Awards) was established.
1974 National Junior Angus Showmanship Contest moved to be held in conjunction with the National Junior Angus Heifer Show.
1976 Bred-and-owned heifers were shown in a separate category at the National Junior Angus Heifer Show and did not compete against the owned heifers.
1977 State Display Contest (now called Best Herdsmanship) was introduced at the National Junior Angus Heifer Show.
1980 The National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) was formed at the National Junior Angus Heifer Show in Wichita, Kan., and the first NJAA Board of Directors was elected.
1980 Advisor of the Year Award was established (first awarded in 1981).
1980 National Junior Recognition Program updated to add Gold Awards. (First Gold Awards presented in 1981)
1981 Cow-calf classes were introduced into the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS).
1982 Bred-and-Owned Bull classes were first shown at the NJAS.
1983 The first Angus Beef Cook-off was held.
1984 Steer classes were added to the NJAS.
1985 The Honorary Angus Foundation Award was established by the NJAA Board.
1985 A carcass contest was added to the NJAS.
1986 The NJAA Handbook for Junior Angus Association Leaders was developed.
1986 The National Scrapbook Contest was first held in conjunction with the NJAS.
1988 The NJAA first offered the Computer Cow-Calf Game to its members.
1989 The first NJAA Public Speaking Contest was held at the NJAS.
1990 The NJAA Poster Contest was introduced at the NJAS.
1990 The first CAB/NJAA Scholarship was awarded.
1991 NJAA Team Sales Competition was first held at NJAS.
1991 Officer structure of the NJAA Board of Directors was changed.
1992 The first Angus Journal/NJAA Photography Contest was held.
1992 A Sweepstake Contest was initiated at the NJAS.
1993 LEAD Conference introduced. Reintroduction of carcass steer contest at NJAS.
1994 The first Outstanding Leadership Award was given.
1996 The first NJAA Extemporaneous Public Speaking Contest was held at the NJAS.
1998 The first Angus Foundation Scholarships were awarded, 2 - $2,500 and 15 - $1,000 scholarships.
1999 The first Graphic Design Contest was held at the NJAS.
2000 A 20-year reunion of the NJAA Board of Directors was held during the NJAS in Des Moines, Iowa.
2001 First NJAS hosted by multiple states held in Denver, Colo.
2001 One time junior membership fee structure was changed to an annual dues paying membership.
2001 Launched the Angus Foundation Web site.
2002 The Mentoring Program began at the NJAS.
2002 The Creative Writing and Project of the Year contests were held at the NJAS.
2003 Angus Foundation scholarships were increased to $25,000. Two $3,500 and 18 $1,000 scholarships were given.
2006 A Team Fitting Competition was added to the list of sponsored contests at the NJAS.
2006 The Sweepstakes Competition was split into 2 categories.
2006 The Angus Foundation scholarships were increased from $25,000 to $100,000 which include 2 $5,000; 20 $3,000 and 30 $1,000 scholarships.
2007 The first state wide community service project was held at the NJAS.
2007 Regional Raising the Bar state officer trainings introduced.
