ANGUS YOUTH PARADE CHAMPIONS

 

AT 2003 NATIONAL JUNIOR ANGUS SHOW

 

“KOOL AS CAN BE IN 2003” IN LOUISVILLE

 

            Youth from all parts of the United States gathered in Louisville, Ky., July 13-19 for the 2003 National Junior Angus Show, “Kool as Can Be in 2003.”  The Kentucky Angus Association and Kentucky Junior Angus Association hosted the event, which showcased 1,165 head of cattle by 663 exhibitors from 35 states.

            Phil Trowbridge, Ghent, N.Y., evaluated the 697 owned females.  Bill Wilson, Cloverdale, Ind., judged the 243 bred-and-owned females, 66 cow-calf pairs, 59 bred-and-owned bulls and 63 steers.  Thirty-seven carcass steers also competed for top honors.

            Grandview Womack Miss 7172 captured grand champion bred-and-owned female honors for Katrina Womack, Pembroke, Ky.  The November 2002 daughter of Twin Valley Precision E161 first won heifer calf champion.

Kylee Carr, Elwood, Ind., led the reserve grand champion bred-and-owned female.  C&S Wendy 211 is a May 2002 daughter of C A Future Direction 5321 and first won intermediate champion.

Marands Royal Lady 1037 claimed grand champion owned female honors.  Emily McCurry, Burrton, Kan., led the September 2001 daughter of Leachman Saugahatchee 3000C that first topped the senior division.

Paige Wallace, Mount Vernon, Mo., led the reserve grand champion owned female.  WCC Blackbird 244 is an October 2002 daughter of Vermilion Dateline 7078 and first won late heifer calf champion.

 

Callie Smith, Lebanon, Tenn., led the grand champion bred-and-owned bull, C Q S Bando Connection 5042.  The November 2002 son of BT Bando 196J first won bull calf champion.

Megan Weisel, Louisville, Ohio, claimed reserve grand champion bred-and-owned bull.  Weisels Blaster 1180 is a March 2002 son of P V F New Horizon 001.  He first topped the junior division.

Pohlmans Barbara 255 293 01 claimed grand champion bred-and-owned cow-calf pair honors.  Emily Pohlman, Norfolk, Neb., owns the March 2001 daughter of Krugerrand of Donamere 490.  A January 2003 son of TC Foreman 016 is at side.

            D A J S Mary K008 won reserve grand champion bred-and-owned cow-calf pair.  Katy Satree, Montague, Texas, showed the March 2000 daughter of TC Stockman 365.  An April 2003 heifer calf sired by Leachman Saugahatchee 3000C completes the winning duo.

Kayla Gunn, Tiplersville, Miss., led the grand champion owned cow-calf.  B H R Miss Lucy 01 is a March 2001 daughter of S A F 598 Bando 5175.  An April 2003 bull calf sired by Northern Improvement 4480 GF is at side.

Travis Jones, Harrod, Ohio, showed the reserve grand champion owned cow-calf pair.  Dameron PVF Proven Queen 1144 is a May 2001 daughter of Leachman Explorer.  A March 2003 daughter of Bon View New Design 878 is at side.

Katy Satree, Montague, Texas, showed the grand champion steer.  DAJS Steer M23 is a March 2002 son of Leachman Saugahatchee 3000C.  He weighed in at 1,270 pounds.

Ashley Berkram, Park City, Mont., led the reserve grand champion steer.  Greens T M Express 2013 is an April 2002 son of Northern Express 0424.  He weighed 1,270 pounds on show day.

In the carcass competition, Blake Brockway, Indianola, Iowa, entered the grand champion entry.  The steer had live weight of 1,160 pounds with a carcass weight of 736 pounds.  The carcass had 0.30-inch fat thickness and a ribeye area of 13.9 inches.  The steer graded high choice with a yield grade of 2.0 and met Certified Angus Beef® (CAB) product specifications.

John Pfeiffer, Mulhall, Okla., entered the reserve grand champion carcass steer.  The winning entry weighed in at 1,178 pounds and posted a carcass weight of 723 pounds.  The steer had a fat thickness of 0.30 inch and a 13-inch ribeye.  The steer graded low prime with a yield grade of 2.24 and qualified for CAB Prime.
