Hillman/Bon View Farms Awards First Angus Scholarship

The endowment fund established within the Angus Foundation has allowed for a first youth scholarship to be awarded in 2013.

Funded during the recent Vision of Value: Campaign for Angus, a capital campaign for the Angus breed that concluded in 2011, the Howard and JoAnne Hillman/Bon View Farms Angus Scholarship Endowment Fund initially will allow for one, $1,000 scholarship to be awarded to a South Dakota Angus junior. The first winner of this scholarship is Alex Rogen of Brandon, S.D., who received the award at the 2013 National Junior Angus Show in Kansas City, Mo., on July 10.

Howard and JoAnne Hillman of Sioux Falls, S.D., are no strangers to the Angus breed. From 1908-1999, their Angus seedstock operation, Bon View Farms in Canova, S.D., produced quality, elite cattle through ups and downs, financial prosperity and hard economic times, and the sacrifices of many. They had many successful appearances in national show rings over the years and offered genetic advancements to the Angus breed through annual production sales.

Even after their dispersal sale in 1999, Howard and JoAnne have continued to support Angus cattle through volunteering their time in the American Angus Association and Angus Foundation. Howard served as chairperson of the Leadership Cabinet for the Vision of Value: Campaign for Angus.

“The junior program is a strong part of our association, and youth are the future of our industry and the Angus business,” says Howard Hillman. “We feel it’s so important to give back to our youth.”

In years the endowment’s investment revenue is sufficient, the Howard and JoAnne Hillman/Bon View Farms Angus Scholarship Endowment Fund will provide for a second $1,000 undergraduate scholarship to Angus youth from throughout the United States.

“One can only be humbled by the Hillmans’ generosity in establishing this wonderful scholarship endowment,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “With the ever-increasing costs of higher education, this scholarship will help empower Angus youth to pursue their dreams of attending college.”
