Angus
Foundation: Champions Youth, Education & Research
The
organization’s annual Supporter Recognition Event recognizes generous donors
who contribute to the Angus breed.
For more than 35 years, the Angus Foundation,
the not-for-profit arm of the American Angus Association, has championed the
causes of youth, education and research for the Angus breed and beef industry
as a whole.
The Angus Foundation celebrated its many
generous donors and accomplishments for 2016 at the annual Supporter
Recognition Event, hosted Nov. 4 at the Marriott in Indianapolis, Ind., prior
to the start of the 2016 Angus Convention.
The evening event honored Angus Foundation
supporters who have contributed $250 or more during the past fiscal year (Oct.
1, 2015 – Sept. 30, 2016).
“We have made great strides in advancing the
Angus breed thanks to those who have served as champions for our organization,”
says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “We’re truly grateful for
those champions’ continued support over the past 36 years.”
More than 300 attendees enjoyed a delicious
meal featuring the Certified Angus Beef®
(CAB®) brand, while the following emcees led the evening’s
festivities: National Junior Angus Board (NJAB) Chairman Macy Perry, Prather,
Calif.; NJAB Foundation Director Braden Henricks,
Anadarko, Okla.; and Angus Foundation Board Chairman Leo McDonnell, Jr.,
Columbus, Mont.
“Looking back at the numerous champions the
Angus Foundation has involved since its inception is a testament to our members
and their will to give back and ability to look to the future,” McDonnell says.
“The champions of the Angus Foundation are evident throughout our Angus
membership: the junior who excels in scholastics, the breeder who benefits from
our progressive research programs and the member who becomes more active by
taking part in one of the Association’s many educational programs.”
During the event, tribute was
given to the late David McMahon, Sr., one of the first champions of the Angus
Foundation.
“David McMahon, Sr., was truly a champion of
the Angus breed, the Angus Foundation and especially Angus youth — a cause that
inspired him to give of his time, talents and treasure,” Jenkins says. “It’s
impossible to measure the philanthropic impact McMahon has had on the Angus
Foundation’s progress over the years.”
Honoring Angus Champions
The Angus Foundation auctioned the original
artwork, “Concerned Mothers” by nationally renowned Western artist Brian Asher,
Snyder, Texas. The final bid of $12,000 went to Whitestone Farm, Aldie, Va. The funds will benefit the Angus Foundation’s
education, youth and research initiatives.
The Angus Foundation was also proud to honor
Lifetime Giving Supporters for their continued investment in the Angus breed.
The individuals and families recognized have, over the
lifetime of the Angus Foundation, contributed an accumulative $25,000 or
more.
One distinguished Angus breeder has reached the
level of Angus Visionary, having
contributed an accumulative $500,000-$999,000: Charles W. and Judy Herbster, Herbster Angus Farms,
Falls City, Neb.
Angus
Builders, who
contributed $100,000 or more during the fiscal year, were:
Lawson and Debbie Hembree, Sugar Hill Farms, Inc., Fort Smith, Ark.; and Kelly
and Martie Jo Schaff, Schaff Angus Valley, St. Anthony, N.D.
Honored as Angus
Patrons for donations more than $50,000, were Howard and JoAnne Hillman,
Sioux Falls, S.D., and Sysco Corporation, Houston, Texas.
Roy and Karen Jones, Jones & Gilliam Angus,
L.P., Gainesville, Mo., were also recognized as Angus Patrons. In 2006, the Jones had
anonymously donated $50,000 to the Missouri Angus Association Scholarship
Endowment Fund contingent on the Missouri Angus Association raising $50,000 by
December 31, 2006 — a goal that Missouri Angus breeders met. Today, this
scholarship fund stands at more than $225,000. Earlier this year, the Jones’
decided to publicly endorse the Angus Foundation,
looking to inspire other Angus breeders to give to the Angus Foundation.
The lifetime Angus Benefactors, reaching $25,000, were: John Ames, Whispering
Pines Cattle Co., LLC, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Terry Bailey and James Butler, High
Roller Angus, Center, Texas; Ronald Hansen and Thomas Hansen, Oliver A. Hansen
Family, Durant, Iowa; Milford and Peggy Jenkins, St. Joseph, Mo.; Dave and
Phyllis Nichols, Nichols Farms, Ltd., Bridgewater, Iowa; Barry and Roxanne
Pollard, Pollard Farms, LLC, Enid, Okla.; Allan and Cecelia Teixeira, John and
Heather Teixeira, Teixeira Cattle Company, Pismo Beach, Calif.; Bob and Cathy
Watkins, Beaver Ridge Farm, Middletown, Ind.; Dan and Staci Wilks and Farris
and JoAnn Wilks, Wilks Ranch, Cisco, Texas; and Zoetis, Parsippany, N.J.
“We sincerely thank our generous supporters for
being champions for the causes of Angus youth, education and research,” Jenkins
says. “Because of these champions, the Angus Foundation can make a lasting
positive impact on the Angus and beef industries.”
Additional highlights from the evening
included a special presentation to the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) Steer
Carcass Contest winners and recognition of Chairman McDonnell for his service
and leadership on the Angus Foundation Board of Directors.
