“In a League of Our
Own” Sponsors Angus Foundation Scholarships
Excess funds from the
show allowed for three new scholarships to be awarded in 2013.
The Angus Foundation awarded three new scholarships at the 2013 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Kansas City, Mo., on Wednesday evening, July 10, made possible by the 2012 NJAS host states, including Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee. Excess funds raised for last year’s NJAS themed “In a League of Our Own,” which took place in Louisville, Ky., allowed for $15,000 in undergraduate scholarships to be awarded to Angus youth from those three states. Funds will be used to support three undergraduate scholarships at $500 each for a total expenditure of $1,500 annually.
The announcement of this scholarship fund was made during the 2013 National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo., where the 2012 NJAS host states presented $115,000 to the Angus Foundation during the Angus junior show on Jan. 17. In addition to making $15,000 available for youth scholarships, the donation allowed for $5,000 to help support the 2013 NJAS; $5,000 for the Angus Foundation’s use for education, youth and research; and the balance of $90,000 for a future NJAS involving Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee.
The three first winners of the 2012 NJAS “In a League of Our Own” scholarships include Colby Myers, Harrodsburg, Ky.; Lauren Grimes, Hillsboro, Ohio; and Hannah Rowlett, Hurricane Mills, Tenn.
“It’s both a pleasure and honor for the Angus Foundation to assist donors, in this case three state Angus associations simultaneously, in achieving their goals and objectives for their generous gifts,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “Angus youth will benefit in a variety of ways for years to come from these states’ financial support.”
The 2012 NJAS Committee included Charlie and Paula Boyd of Mays Lick, Ky., John and Joanie Grimes of Hillsboro, Ohio, and Lydell and Holly Meier of Clinton, Tenn.
“We received nationwide financial support for the (2012) NJAS, and it was the consensus of the Committee to do as much as we could to support the Angus Foundation,” says Charlie Boyd, co-chair of the 2012 NJAS Committee.
Another co-chair, Joanie Grimes says this support is all about providing more opportunities.
"The Angus Foundation has provided tremendous opportunities for our young people,” Grimes says. “It only seemed logical to work with the Angus Foundation to offer scholarships to the youth of Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee, who helped to make the 2012 NJAS possible, and assist with the Foundation’s efforts to help further their education."
